Dr. Scott – Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, University of Virginia

Lecture on theNeuronal Circuitry Controlling Food-Seeking Behavior.  In this lecture, Dr. Scott will discuss: 1) the neuronal circuitry regulating the homeostatic and hedonic control of feeding and 2) behavioral tasks used to assess the drive to consume both drug and natural reward.  Several cutting-edge technologies will be introduced that are currently being applied to the investigation of feeding control circuitry. One participant will be asked to volunteer to present an assigned article; the article and background reading will be distributed before the class.

Lecture on the Epigenetic Regulation of Behavior.  In this lecture, Dr. Scott will discuss: 1) Epigenetic modifications observed in the nervous system; 2) behavioral effects resulting from epigenetic changes in the genome 3) The lecture will be followed by a literature discussion (one participant will be asked to volunteer to present an assigned article; the article and background reading will be distributed before the class).

Dr. Patel – Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, University of Virginia. Lecture on Membrane Potential and Action Potentials.  In this lecture, Dr. Patel will discuss: 1) passive membrane properties and how they are established; 2) What happens when an action potential is generated; 3) structures of ion channels. Several cutting-edge technologies will be introduced that are currently being used to study passive and active membrane properties of neurons. The lecture will be followed by a literature discussion (one participant will be asked to volunteer the presentation of an assigned article; the article and background reading will be distributed before the class).

Dr. Patel – Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, University of Virginia. Lecture on Ion Channelopathies.  In this lecture, Dr. Patel will discuss: 1) inherited ion channel disorders including epilepsy, cardiac arrhythmias and pain; 2) How specific mutations can alter ion channel biophysical properties; 3) Ligand gated channelopathies.  The lecture will be followed by a literature discussion (one participant will be asked to volunteer the presentation of an assigned article; the article and background reading will be distributed before the class).

Lecture of Synaptic Signaling.  In this lecture, Dr. Zhu will discuss: 1) Cellular mechanism of synaptic plasticity; 2) Synaptic mechanism of synaptic plasticity; 3) Molecular mechanism of synaptic plasticity; and 4) Nanoscale mechanism of synaptic plasticity.  Several cutting-edge technologies will be introduced (one participant will be asked to volunteer the presentation of an assigned article; the article and background reading will be distributed before the class).
